It's been awhile

current mood: accomplished

I haven't posted in a very long time. Mostly because life just continues apace so I don't really feel like there's all that much to blog about. Life has been good. Still have my steady job, still having a wonderful time now that my mom is married, still hang out with the same people, dated a bit, work out regularly, eat healthy, etc. I've been catching up on a lot of reading and have been putting my library card to really good use lol. Also my Netflix account.

However, today I weighed myself for the first time in almost a year (I think). Now, take into account I'm 5'6", about a year ago I was maybe 141 lbs. In high school, when I was on the swim team and 5'4", I was 132 lbs at my most in shape. I am currently 124.4 lbs!! I am lighter than when I was in high school and on the swim team AND I'm taller by two inches. I'm astonished truthfully. I haven't been attempting to lose anymore weight really just get in shape. I've been running and doing pilates/body toning/yoga and assumed that my muscle mass would make me weigh a bit more than someone who was just "thin." I mean, I noticed that most of clothes need to be taken in by this point but I haven't been starving myself or any other ridiculous things society leads you to believe you have to do to lose weight. I've just gotten very healthy in how I eat and I like to work out regularly now (at least 4/5 days a week). This is especially astonishing to me since two and a half years ago I weighed in, at my heaviest ever, at around 163 lbs. I have lost about 40 lbs in two and a half years just through being healthier. o.0 For reals.

I've also taken to enjoying Oolong tea every day. It is a wonderful and relaxing way to start the day (plus) yummy. I heard about how Oolong tea is very good for maintaining your metabolic and digestive system and I have been finding that to be true. Combined with my usual fruit protein smoothie (frozen mango, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, a fresh whole banana, vanilla flavored soy protein powder, and flax seed oil) my system has been running along in a way that makes me feel the healthiest I've been in a long time. I cut down drastically on my sodium intake and have taken to really watching that. I was raised in a household that uses way too much salt on everything so relearning how I think about that was at first a bit hard. But I find I enjoy the subtleties of flavor in food much more so now so I can't find it a bad thing in any way. I still love my carbs but I get bread that has no salt added, etc. and I only use ingredients that I will really taste in the finished product. For example I've been really enjoying sun-dried tomatoes with eggs (if I do sunnyside-up eggs I lay them over a half cup of brown rice and goat cheese, scrambled I put them in a whole wheat wrap with some sharp cheddar). So ridiculously yummy plus healthy.

and now, speaking of food, I am getting rather hungry lol. I just had to post this somewhere. I'm in a good type of shock since it was a good outcome I wasn't even really trying for. ^_^

I hope everything is going as well, or better, for everyone else too!

Happy July 4th everyone! I hope you are all enjoying it! They moved the fireworks here in NYC so that now I have a fantastic view from my apartment's balcony and it will be a lovely evening I think ^_^ People are always welcome to watch from here if they're in town of course since I will have won the lottery basically on the fantastic view this year lol

EDIT: oh my goodness was the view amazing from my place!!! you could see all six boats and the coordinated light show going on along both sides of the river! it was spectacular and this probably means I'll have to throw an official Independence Day party next year given that my view probably can't be beat in nyc...

happy

current mood: happy

so things have been going very well for me lately.

I got a semi-promotion at work while my boss is on leave and I am very much liking the pay raise (which means I can buy my MacBook that much sooner). also still working out regularly and whatnot.

I signed myself up to start taking French this spring. I drag my heels when it comes to memorizing by wrote for languages but I have no excuse this time since I have no other homework. My high school is also offering art classes for all us alumni and I am definitely signing up for the painting class with my old teacher Satish who is awesome since it will most likely be a blast. gaming proceeds apace and I didn't realize how much I missed it (ok, maybe I did but it sounds better, or less geeky, if I say that :-P).

I'm getting involved with some of my sorority alumni events. I went to one book club they hosted thusfar and that was actually quite a lot of fun. but then they spoke my lingo when they baited the trap with "book club" ^_~. We were supposed to read "Forever" by Pete Hamill. it's a really interesting concept but I barely made a dent in it because I have so many other books on my platter that came before it. There were the first three of the Dresden Files, The Coyote Road, and I'm still in the middle of The Enchantress of Florence. plus I probably have some more wandering around and I've been meaning to re-read a lot of my Joseph Campbell books on the progression of myth and the journey of the hero (also my Egyptian mythology) and other such "personal" research I guess.

I went to a sorta middle school reunion on Tuesday and had a really really good time. I forgot I was actually popular in middle school, go figure lol. so people were excited to see me and one girl said "if we were going to have a 10 year reunion I assumed you would be the person to throw it." oh! and yet...I didn't. sorry? so I said I'd help make up an actual reunion for everyone. and now I'm getting invited to a ton of things by them because "I'm sweet and cool and whatnot" ::falls over laughing:: ok, what, I'm allowed to be startled and amused by that turn of events.

Bill, i.e. my step-father-to-be, has been staying with us since December 20. He's really nice and very quiet (therefore a nice counter to my mother). He adored Erin when she was here for New Year's (when we had SOOO much fun!) and said she was welcome to North Carolina too and he asked me a couple weeks later if she knew he wasn't just saying that. like i said, he's really nice. ^_^ He also likes to clean..a lot. it's really funny. he insists on cleaning the dishes and is constantly doing the laundry which is a bit like "huh?" in our house lol (not saying we're dirty just that we drag our heels a bit about it more). and he loves to pick up wines to go with dinner (or asti spumante/nando which are yummy). It's been fun having him here actually though at the moment he has a really bad flu.

also it seems I'm going to Nag's Head in July with the entire Dalton clan and ma. It seems it's a tradition to rent out a house for a week on the beach and just chill. I think I can deal with that ^_~ I'll probably have to wear sunscreen like crazy, though by this point I think I'm so pale I'm just reflective :-P but, you know, beach time, pool time, chill time with my adorable nieces and nephew and my cool step-siblings. when did this start being my life? ::scratches head::

been catching up with quite a few people lately which is rather nice. so either I suddenly became the person to catch up with or i'm not hibernating as much or some other weird reason like planetary alignment?

hmm, also I have a question to end this long post for all of you. You guys probably remember when I discovered Muscato d'Asti and realized that, wait, I actually like wine, just dessert wine. well now I want to educate myself on lovely sweet wines but find that almost no stores actually keep any in stock. Now I realize that there are a ton of stores online that sell wines, etc., but I have no idea which stores are good or even which companies, varieties, etc. It's like being thrown into the deep end of the dessert wine pool online and a barely leaky drought in person. anybody want to help a girl out and point me in the right direction? give me some hints (or whack me upside the head with really big suggestions, I won't mind..much). ^_^

List the first ten series that come to mind. Your friends will comment with the character from each series that they think you are most like. Remember this is who I'm most like, not favorites!

1. Heroes
2. Kushiel's Legacy
3. Vampire Chronicles
4. Buffy
5. Black Jewels series
6. The Sandman Series
7. Harry Potter
8. Lord of the Rings (including Silmarillion, etc)
9. The Orphan's Tales
10. mythology (does this count as a series?)

yeah, that was actually a bit hard to come up with just off the top of my head. in actual news I will post something real about what's been up in my life at some point relatively soon. perhaps right after this ::shrug::

jubilant

current mood: jubilant and a bit star-struck

I went to an interview with Neil Gaiman celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Sandman series. He is even more amazing in person! His William Shatner and, especially, his Harlan Ellison impressions are hilarious. He's so very self-aware and witty I was amazingly engaged the entire time! Also I have to admit I got immensely star-struck when he signed my copy of The Dream Hunters. I looked him in the eye, told him it was a pleasure meeting him, and then my brain just went blank..and I had a smart question and everything, dammit!

also, he had some breaking news during the interview: Death is going to be compiled together into an Absolute Edition. It was just decided right before he came. Also, there's a good likelihood of a Death movie being made and that he's going to direct it! He got tips and got to hang out with Guillermo del Toro during the making of Hellboy 2 just to get a feel for it!

ok, i'm going to go continue squeeing off in the corner...but, yeah, Neil Gaiman full of win. ^_^

Sarah Palin

What we know about her thusfar:

-is a 44-year old woman

-mother of five (oldest in Iraq and enlisted on September 11th and the youngest has Down's Syndrome)

-husband is in the Oil business, separating the oil from the water, etc.

-has been governor of a sparsely populated state for only two years and was a "hockey mom" before that

-pro-life, pro-death penalty, wants to teach creationism in schools

-is a past Beauty Pageant Contestant so she looks purty in front of the camera ::rolls eyes here:: oh wait, was supposed to be holding comment...

-is under investigation for trying to use her position to get her brother-in-law fired after he divorced her sister, instead she fired the guy above the brother-in-law who refused to agree to such an action

-McCain is currently suffering through his third bout of Melanoma and is not expected to really survive through the first term and did I mention she has no national experience whatsoever

-is the mother of a baby with Down's Syndrome who is going to remain in Alaska while she hits the campaign trail (she says she's going to get a nanny); and she claims to be all about "family values"

-refuses to put polar bears on the endangered list despite their dramitically reduced habitat, food supplies, and therefore numbers

-they talk more about her extracurricular activities than her political experience or her academic qualifications (because she has little of either)

-is a member of the NRA and is an active hunter (she's shot wolves from airplanes and supports killing wolf pups), she's part of the Alaska Outdoors Council

-pro-big oil

-is supposedly from a blue-collar background with a husband who only works in the big-oil industry and is NOT an executive

-her husband is also partially of native Yup'ik origin, is a commercial fisherman as well as a worker in big-oil, and is a champion snow-mobiler (she's pushing these facts *hard*)

and just from the presentation today:
-thusfar her oratory skills have left me cold. Just because she mentioned the date September 11th around her son's army recruitment more than once doesn't mean the survivors of that tragedy will suddenly think she is their new savior

-her environmental stances, actions, etc appall me greatly and I shudder at the thought of how our environmental efforts would decline with her in office ::shudder::

-I hated the cheerleaders at the presentation. It made the whole thing seem like a pep-rally and not a serious political presentation. oh, yeah, let's try to seem all-american and portray young girls in skimpy skirts kicking and twirling around right before we announce a woman as vp....

-McCain is being a hypocrite since his main complaint against Obama has been the "inexperience" factor and then he chooses a running partner with even less experience by far than Obama

-if a woman was to be chosen there were other much stronger candidates to be selected. Just because the candidate is a woman does not mean she will get the "Hillary-vote"--woman are not cards that can just be dealt willy-nilly and we'll follow just because of the gender. Hillary was liked by a lot of older woman because of her issues not because of her gender.

-McCain completely contradicted himself with the merits he pointed out and the known truth. he claimed he chose a candidate that stood against those whose put their self-interest before their political responsibilities...about a woman who tried to have a man fired for divorcing her sister (yes, because he was also supposedly a wife-beater but still has nothing to do with his job) and is currently under investigation for it

-she said she has fought against the "Good Old Boy" party...while standing next to McCain and running as his vp...

Truthfully, McCain ten years ago was a brilliant politician. He was a more middle-of the road republican though still conservative. Thought things out and tried to keep the peace between the two parties. he was even a good orator. I feel like he sold out to just get the nomination ticket and is trying to dove-tail onto the Bush administration. He now wibbles on policies and proposes tax breaks during a major national debt. He's been accused of forgetting things and he is currently fighting his third bout of Melanoma. He's a torture survivor which could actually serve against him because supposedly torture survivors can relapse at any point in their lives. and he's not helping himself with Palin. He chose somebody who's as extreme a conservative as he has now become, who has no national experience to boot, and is currently under investigation.

Truthfully, I'm very sad that this is how a politician I actually rather liked ten years ago is now going to be remembered. For this farce. That saddens me...
